FIRE PROCEDURE AND ACTION PLAN
This is the fire plan for:
30 Meadow Road,
Marske by the Sea
Redcar
Cleveland
TS11 7BY
The persons responsible for fire safety are:
Rebecca Brewster
Angela Brewster
The type of care provided:
Daytime Childminding
The number and ages of children we are registered to care for:
Both of us, as an Ofsted childminder is registered to care for 6 children under the age of 8, only 3 of these can be under 5 and only 1 under 12 months. We can also look after children over the age of 8. We will not normally look after more than a  maximum of 10 children at any one time.

FIRE PREVENTION
Listed below are the precautions we will take to reduce the chance of a fire starting:
Kitchen/Dining Room:
Children will be closely supervised at all times when in the kitchen.
Kitchen is equipped with an electric cooker, fridge/freezer, blender, microwave, kettle, toaster and washing machine. All are checked, cleaned, maintained and switched off when not in use. Appliances are not left unattended when in use, and are not used overnight.
Matches are stored on a high shelf.
There is a fire blanket and fire extinguisher located within easy access, which will only be used if we are confident it is safe to do so.
Any flammable materials will be stored away from heat sources.

Electrical:
We will ensure that electrical sockets are not overloaded. There will be no trailing wires, across or under carpets. If used extension cables will be fully unwound from the drum. Electrical appliances will be checked regularly and replaced as necessary.
Smoking:
There will be no smoking at any time on the premises and a no smoking sign will be displayed. Parents/Carers/Visitors will be made aware of this and asked to extinguish any cigarettes before they arrive on the premises (including the garden and pathway).
Aerosols:
Aerosols are kept away from heat sources and disposed responsibly in the blue recycling bin.
Heating:
The property is gas central heated throughout and the boiler is regularly serviced. There is an electric fire in the living room, which will be protected with a fire guard. Clothes are dried on the washing line or on a clothes horse away from childminding areas.
Night time:
Appliances such as dishwasher and washing machines are never used overnight.
Internal doors are closed.
Family are aware of what to do if a fire breaks out.
Appliances:
Electrical appliances in the child minding area will be unplugged when not in use.
Other:
Children in our care will be taught about fire-safety. We will include age appropriate activities particularly around bonfire night.
Combustibles will be stored away from electrical sources.
We will ensure that fire doors are kept shut at all times.

FIRE DETECTION AND WARNING
We know that even with the best of fire prevention that fires can start unexpectedly. If any of us discover a fire, we will raise the alarm by shouting loudly.

We have read:
Fire Safety in the Home
We have taken note of the advice given for example:
We have ensured that all adults know where window and door keys are stored. They will be at hand near every exit.
We have planned escape routes and will practice these with the children in our care.
The home is fitted with smoke detectors that are tested regularly. The alarms are located both in the downstairs hallway and on the upstairs landing.
Smoke alarms are tested once a week and tests are recorded. They are vacuumed twice a year which are also recorded.
Batteries are replaced immediately when alarm indicates they are running low.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT
We have a fire blanket in the kitchen and have read the instructions on how to use it effectively. We know that the fire blanket could be used to contain a small fire, giving us time to escape. We know also that the fire blanket could be used to smother a fire on a child’s clothing. However whilst we realise that the fire blanket can be effective we know that the priority is to evacuate people rather than fight the fire.
PREPARING FOR A FIRE
We have prepared escape routes and an action plan so that if a fire is discovered everyone can be evacuated quickly and safely.
We have consulted the document fire safety in the home and used it to inform our plan. Our escape routes are as shown on the plan.
To make sure that the escape routes can be used;
We will keep all stairs, landing and corridors clear of obstructions and tripping hazards. Stair gates will be easily opened by an adult if necessary.
During the day doors will be locked but keys will be easily accessible on a high hook beside the door.
Becky will keep her mobile phone and a torch next to her bed for use in emergencies.
FIRE ACTION
We have an action plan in case of fire and practice it 6 monthly with the children and within one month of any new starter. We will record this practice.
During the daytime if a fire is discovered we will alert everyone by shouting fire. Our priority will be to evacuate everybody and not to investigate or fight the fire. We will gather the children together in the main activity room and identify our nearest escape route. If we have to move through smoke, we know it is important that we stay low. We will carry young babies and hold toddlers by the hand, older children will be instructed to stay with us and follow the planned route. We will assemble over the road. Once we are all out safely we will phone 999 and ask for the fire brigade by using a mobile phone or neighbours phone. We will stay out of the house until we have been given the all clear by the fire officer.  In the meantime we will care for the children in Angela’s house and notify parents.

Night time
If we are awoken by the smoke alarm, or discover a fire at night. We will gather everyone together on the landing and evacuate through the nearest escape route. We will cater for each child by waking heavy sleepers and carrying young children down the stairs.
ALTERNATIVE ESCAPE ROUTES AT NIGHT TIME
If we stick to our fire prevention plan a fire is unlikely to start. However if a fire does start our smoke alarms will give early warning, and if we close doors at night we should have time to rouse everybody and leave safely. If this is not possible we do have a backup plan.
If we cannot get down the stairs because of heat and smoke we will gather in the master front bedroom. We will restrict smoke by closing the door and using clothing and duvets to block gaps around the door. We will use a mobile or land line to dial 999 and ask for the fire brigade and open the window to shout for help. We will stay low until the fire brigade arrives to minimise smoke inhalation.
