FIDDLESTICKS CHILDCARE

Policies

Medication and Illness Policy and Procedure
As professional OFSTED registered childminders, we both hold current Paediatric First Aid Certificates.  We always keep a well stocked first aid box on the premises and carry a small one with us on outings.
Any accidents or injuries are recorded on an accident form and parents will be informed of any incidents and treatment given and will be requested to sign their acknowledgement.
Written permission to administer simple creams and medicines will be sought from parents/carers, prior to their child starting with us as will permission to apply first aid and call 999 for assistance in the case of an emergency.  In an emergency situation, parents will be contacted as soon as possible.  In the meantime one of us would accompany your child to hospital if required whilst the other children would remain in the care of another fully qualified childminder, registered assistant or alternatively would remain with one of us until parents could be contacted.
We are happy to look after children with minor colds or coughs and administer appropriate medicines with written consent.  However, if your child is unwell with a high temperature or has an infectious condition, we would be unable to care for your child.  If whilst in our care your child develops a temperature we will inform you and administer paracetamol (if you have provided the medicine with written consent) in order to bring their temperature down as soon as possible.  However if your child’s temperature does not reduce within 1 hour or their temperature rises above 38oC then we will call you to request the immediate collection of your child.  This is due to the fact your child will require a greater level of attention with possible further medical intervention and this could prove difficult to manage whilst we care for the other children in our setting at the same time. Your child will need to remain at home for the length of time appropriate to their condition as recommended by The Health Protection Agency.  We hold a copy of ‘Guidance on Infection Control in Schools and other Child Care Settings’ which we will refer to and is available for parents to see upon request.  However, in relation to chickenpox, we request that your child does not return to our setting until a minimum of 10 days after you first inform us of their illness.
If a child is well enough to return to our child care setting but still requires medication, we are happy to administer this with written consent.  Please note that the medicine must be supplied in its original bottle with the child’s name and dosage clearly labelled.
If your child becomes ill whilst in our care, we will make them as comfortable as possible and parents/carers will be contacted.  We will continue to care for your child until your child is collected.
